Sheikh Abduljabbar Kabara’s trial begins in Kano

The trial of Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara commenced on Wednesday at the Upper Sharia court in Kano.

Agents of the Correctional Service in Kano took the cleric to court, which is presided over by Justice Ibrahim Sarki Yola, according to the BBC Hausa.

The Kano State Government had on Friday, July 16 arraigned Sheikh Abduljabbar on charges bordering on blasphemy and incitement, which the cleric has denied.

Sarki Yola has ordered Sheikh Albduljabbar to enter the dock.

Aisha Mahmud is the lead counsel for the Kano State Government.

On the part of Sheikh Abduljabbar, his lawyers include Sale Mohammad Bakaro, Yahuza Mohammed Nura, Bashir Sabi’u, RS Abdullahi, Y I Abubakar, Zaubairu Abubakar, Ya’u Abdullahi Umar, B S Ahmad, and Umar Usman.

Justice Sarki Yola said on the first day of sitting, the charges were read to the defendant but he denied them and asked for witnesses. The government’s lawyers said they have witnesses.

The judge asked the government’s lawyers if they have come with their witnesses.

The government’s lead counsel Aisha prayed the court for a date to present their witnesses.

When the judge asked the team defending Sheikh Abduljabbar to respond, Sale Bakaro said their client was arraigned 12 days ago but sadly, the government’s side has not prepared their case against the defendant, which shows that they don’t want the case to progress.

He added that their client is still in custody on the order of the court, which is what they oppose
