Protests: You don’t extinguish fire with fire, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi tells govt

Famous Islamic scholar Shiekh Dahiru Bauchi has called on the Nigerian government to find an amicable solution to the ongoing protests against police brutality in Nigeria.

In an interview with the BBC Hausa, which was monitored by Dateline Nigeria, the scholar described the protests as a threat to peace in Nigeria which is already battling insurgency, banditry and kidnapping.

The protests which have been marred by violence have led to the imposition of 24-hour curfew in Edo, Lagos, Ekiti, Imo, Abia, Osun, Ondo and Plateau states.

Shiekh Dahiru Bauchi said fire cannot be extinguished by fire, but by water. “We are calling on the government to resolve the issue amicably, not through the use of force,” he said.

He said there is the need for the government to also pay attention to the rights of the people and strive to meet their expectations.

The Islamic cleric also urged the protesters to suspend their protests, noting that things can only get worse as they can’t achieve their aim by being on the street.

“Government has ears and eyes – her ears are hearing what the citizens are saying, her eyes are also seeing what the people are going through cincerning hardship, joblessness and insecurity,” according to him.
