Lagos, Ekiti impose curfew, as violence spreads to Abuja, Kano, Jos

Fresh rounds of violence Tuesday broke out in parts of Nigeria, as youths continue to stage #EndSARS protests, demanding the reform of the nation’s police force.

Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja, which had witnessed a spark of violence Monday after thugs allegedly attacked protesters and set ablaze over a dozen cars around Apo mechanic village, woke up to another round of violence on Tuesday when suspected thugs reportedly injured many people around Kabusa- Apo, in the same area.

Many residents stayed indoors in the capital city, trying to avoid being caught in the web of violence.

Skirmishes were also reported on Monday between protesters and alleged thugs in Kubwa part of the territory, with videos circulating online showing youths setting bonfires and blocking roads leading into the suburb.

Thousands of commuters shuttling Abuja were forced to abandon their vehicles and proceed on foot, as sections of major roads into the city, at Bwari and AYA, were taken over by the EndSARS protesters.

In Kano, violence broke out Monday between the Hausa and Igbo communities in parts of No-Man’s Land in Sabon Gari area.

There have been tensions in parts of the state after an #EndSARS protest was staged Monday by residents of Sabon Gari who reportedly demanded for a State of Biafra and resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Eyewitnesses said crisis broke out in the commercial city after another round of EndSARS protest on Tuesday.

Many vehicles parked at St. Thomas Secondary School along Airport Road were vandalized, just as a major supermarket, Galaxy Mart, located along Igbo Road, said to belong to a Kano indigene, was also looted.

Parents rushed to schools in the area to take away their children, while businesses quickly closed.

A bookstore manager in No-Man’s Land told Dateline Nigeria that houses and business outlets had been razed and vandalized.

He said many people ran to the No-Man’s Land police station in the area, seeking refuge.

He, however, said normalcy was restored after soldiers were deployed to the area.

In Jos, the capital of Plateau in North-Central Nigeria, hoodlums razed vehicles and looted shops.

Streets were quickly deserted.

Dateline Nigeria learnt that soldiers intervened and restored peace.

Three police stations were torched by suspected thugs in Lagos, after criminals reportedly hijacked the #EndSARS protest.

Pako police station in Amukoko, Oriole police station and Lapai police station around Ajegunle, were also set on fire this morning by the attackers.

The Lagos State governor, Babajide Santa-Olu, imposed a 24-hour curfew on all parts of the state, to stop “anarchy” from taking over the state.

Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi also imposed curfew in the state to stop the escalation of the already tensed situation.

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki had earlier declared a curfew on Monday after police stations were razed and prison inmates freed by hoodlums.
