KEDCO secures conviction of energy thief in Kano

The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has secured the conviction of one Mu’ammar Aliyu Getso and his younger brother Suleiman Aliyu Getso (now at large) for stealing 5,500 KWH of energy valued at over N100,000

A statement by KEDCO spokesman Ibrahim Sani Shawai, on Thursday, said this followed the arraignment of the offender before a Magistrate Court sitting at Hajj Camp Kano by the Special Investigation and Prosecution Taskforce on Electricity Offences (SIPTEO).

The court convicted Mu’ammar Aliyu Getso of Janbulo area of Kano metropolis on two count charges of criminal conspiracy and energy theft.

‘’Giving her judgment shortly after the convict pleaded guilty to the offence, the Presiding Judge, Sakina Amina Yusuf said the offence is punishable under section 97 subsection 286 subsection 2 of Panel code Law of Kano State, adding that the defendant will pay KEDCO the sum of N101,250.00 or spend one year in prison,’’ Shawai said.

‘’She further added that the defendant will also pay the sum of N20,000 as fine or spend the six months in prison,” he added.

Reacting to the judgment, the ASP Aliyu Bamalli, of the SIPTEO, Kano Branch, said the convict had consumed electricity for 15 months without payments.
