Judge suspends proceedings as Maina collapses in court

Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court has suspended proceedings in the trial of former Chairman, Pensions Reform Task Team (PRTT) Abdulrasheed Maina after the latter’s collapse in court on Thursday.

Mr Maina’ collapse led to chaos as he was hurriedly evacuated by the men of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

At the resumed hearing, Maina’s lawyer, Anayo Adibe, had told Justice Abang that he would be unable to continue with his client’s no-case submission motion today, because he was yet to receive the record of proceedings of the court since Mr Maina’s arraignment.

But Justice Abang told Mr Adibe that it was his duty to get the record of proceedings, which had already been processed, from the registry rather than waiting for the registrar to look for him.

However, as the registrar was reading out the proceedings that were ready for collection, Maina suddenly collapsed.

He was being attended to by court assigned medical officers.

Maina’s case was in November 2019 stalled after a medical expert testified to his inability to appear before the court due to health reasons.
