Hijrah 1442: Kano, Osun declare Thursday public holiday

Kano State Government and its Osun counterpart have declared Thursday, August 20, 2020 (Muharram 1) as public holiday to mark the new Islamic year 1442 AH.

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje urged Muslims in the state to use the occasion for sober reflection and to offer prayers for continued peace, prosperity and general development of the state.

While praying for Allah’s intervention over the current economic hardship being experienced by the people and the ravaging Covid-19 pandemic as well as a new year full of happiness and prosperity, he called on the citizenry to always fear Allah in all their dealings, be tolerant and live peacefully with one another as always preached by Islam.

Also, the Osun State Government, while declaring Thursday, August 20, 2020, as work-free day across the State, congratulated Muslims.

Funke Egbemode, the Honorable Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, State of Osun, said this is to commemorate the beginning of a new Islamic year – 1442 AH, and afford the Muslim Community in the State the opportunity of celebrating this year’s Hijrah.

The State Government wishes to emphasize that the holiday is no approval for large gatherings or unauthorized meetings under any guise. Residents are enjoined to observe the safety guidelines against COVID-19 as outlined by the government and the NCDC.

All workers in the State are expected to resume work on Friday, August 21, 2020.
