Exclusive: Kano govt seals Mohammed Abacha’s office

Officials of the Kano State Accelerated Revenue Drive Task Force Committee have sealed the office of Mohammed Abacha, a son to Nigeria’s former military ruler, Gen Sani Abacha.

The complex is located along Bank Road in part of the city that hosts main branches of major banks, railway station and the state’s revenue board.

Dateline gathered that the office was shut following the failure of the owner to pay to the state government a statutory land use charge.

The state introduced the charge to consolidate the Ground Rent which is provided for under the Land Use Act; Tenement Rate which is provided for under the Local Government Law; and the Property Tax which is provided for under the Land Use Charge Law.

Last year, the Kano State government set up the Accelerated Revenue Drive Task Force to boost revenue generation in the state. Parts of its duties is to ensure the payment of the Land Use Charge.

Abacha runs many of his businesses from the massive one-storey building, it was gathered.

The spokesperson of the task force, Murtala Shehu, told Dateline that Abacha must have defaulted in paying one or all of the consolidated charges to warrant the sealing of his office.

Abacha did not respond to a request from our reporter for comment.
