Bomb attack on Ohakim’s convoy leaves 4 police orderlies dead

Former governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, yesterday escaped death after assailants bombed his convoy.

Four of his police orderlies were killed in the attack.

It was learnt that the gunmen burnt one of the convoy vehicles when they were unable to capture the ex-governor.

Ohakim, who was governor of Imo State between 2007 and 2011, was attacked at Oriagu in the Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of the state.

It was learnt that Ohakim, with two of his children, was returning from a visit when the gunmen attacked him.

A source close to the ex-governor said that it took the bravery of the driver of the ex-governor for him to escape.

The source said, ”His Excellency was the main target but his driver was smart enough to beat them because they were trying to block him.

”Disappointed that their main target had escaped, they blocked his backup vehicle and burnt it. The four policemen with him were burnt.*

Our correspondent gathered that a reinforcement came from Owerri, the state capital, and escorted him to his house.

The Nation was also told that Ohakim was sober over the attack.

His media aide, Emma Chukwu, said he would speak on the issue later.

“I will comment on the issue later; wait,” he told The Nation’s correspondent.

Police spokesman CSP Michael Abattam did not answer calls to his cell phone. (TheNation)
