Alleged SARS killing: IGP asks DIG to investigate as protests hold

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed A Adamu has ordered the Deputy Inspector General of Police in-charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), DIG Anthony Ogbizi to, with immediate effect, take over investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of Late Mr. Tiyamiyu Kazeem.

Kazeem, an assistant captain of Remo Stars Football club, was allegedly killed by an operative of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Sagamu, Ogun State on Saturday. But the Ogun State Police Command said the footballer was knocked down by a hit-and-run driver and not by a policeman as reported.

In a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer DCP Frank Mba, “The IGP gave the order today (Monday), 24th February, 2020 while reviewing daily reports of major crime incidents across the country.”

The statement added that the IGP while commiserating with the family and friends of the deceased, called for calm and assured the people that justice will be done in the matter.

“Any person found culpable will be brought to book,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, three people are feared killed in Sagamu as irate youths staged a protest over the killing of Kazeem, who was killed by a speeding vehicle after he was allegedly pushed from a SARS.

The police spokesman in the state could not be reached for comment up to the time of filing this report.
