Two gunmen suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) were killed by security operatives during a foiled attack on the Imo State Police headquarters in Owerri this morning.
The gunmen were said to have launched the attack from an area beside the state government house where the residences of the heads of security agencies and a university don are located.
A security personnel told Dateline Nigeria that in addition to the two gunmen that were killed, a Hummer bus which conveyed the attackers to place was recovered.
“Troops have gone after the fleeing gunmen,” he said.
Residents said sporadic gunshots were heard allover the state capital.
The spokesperson of the Imo police command, Bala Elkana, confirmed the failed attack, but said only one gunman was killed.
