Zamfara assembly suspends 2 members over alleged links to bandits

Members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have passed a resolution suspending two of their colleagues over allegation of having connection with armed bandits.

The Chairman, House Committee on Information Hon. Shamsu Basko Mafara said a member Yusuf Alhassan Kanoma (Maru North) moved the motion and raised the allegation against two of his colleagues.

The affected members are Yusuf Muhammad Anka (Anka) and Tukur Bakura (Bakura).

But the house spokesman said, as the rule provided, the matter was referred to the house committee on ethics and privilege for investigation. The committee is to report back to the house plenary within three months.

He also said that the two members were asked to stay suspended in order not to jeopardize with the investigation.

While confirming the development, Chairman House Committee on Ethics and Privilege Hon. Kabiru Hashim Dansadau said the decision to suspend the two state legislators is in tandem with the provision of order (13) rule 7 (40) of house standing rule and promised to investigate the matter and report to the house within the time frame agreed.

He promised that his committee would be fair to all parties.

The BBC reported that the suspended legislators were not in the assembly when the decision was taken.

One of the legislators Yusuf Muhammad Anka said they were targeted for attempting to impeach the speaker.
