An NGO, Youth Initiative Against Violence and Human Rights Abuse (YIAVHA) has organised a one-day sensitisation workshop on Inter-faith Cooperation, Religious Harmony, Community Organisation and Technology for Peace, for youths in 10 communities in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau.
Declaring the workshop open on Thursday in Jos, Miss Chudung Sheku, Project Coordinator of the organisation, said the training was part of its ongoing project tagged “Pluraliti”.
According to Sheku, the project aimed at promoting local understanding on Inter-faith harmony, religious inclusiveness and learning in communities around tertiary institutions.
She said the project, supported by the King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz International Centre for Inter-religious and Inter-cultural Dialogue (KAICIID), also aimed at ensuring a peaceful academic environment devoid of religiously motivated violence.
The project coordinator said the objective of the training was to sensitise young people to harness the components of the project in promoting peace in various communities.
She added that the participants for the training were basically young people, adding that such category of people were largely the foot soldiers in communities.
“We are here today to train these youths on Inter-faith cooperation, religious harmony and community organisation. This is part of our ongoing project known as ‘Pluraliti’, which seeks to build and sustain peace in communities.
“We have selected young people for this training because we believe they have the energy to ensure the desired peace is achieved in the society.
“This training will help participants to understand ways to collaborate and form networks that will promote interfaith tolerance and religious harmony in communities.
“It will also enable young people to understand how to use Information Communication Technology (ICT) to promote peaceful co-existence in communities,”she said.
Sheku, said that at the end of the training the participants would become peace ambassadors in their various and urged them to step down knowledge gained to other members of their communities.
She explained that the participants were selected from communities located around the University of Jos, the jurisdiction of the project.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some of the communities include: Fillin Sukuwa, Angwan Rogo, Angwan Rimi, Zinariya, Angwan Jarawa, Farin Gada, Naraguta, Rusaau, among others.
