Veteran Hausa singer, Alhaji Hassan Wayam, has passed on in Zaria, Kaduna State, after a protracted illness.
He died early Saturday and his funeral prayer is expected to hold this morning in his Palladan residence in Zaria, where he made his base over five decades ago.
Born in the 50s in a village called Gwadda, Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Hassan Wayam started singing at an early age using kukuma (a string fiddle).
A soldier was said to have relocated Hassan Wayam in 1969 to Zaria from Mayanci in Zamfara State, where he discovered him. Wayam was then singing for soldiers inside the barracks every evening.
In a twist of fate, his first son whom he thought will succeed him, was killed by soldiers during a post-election violence in 2011.
Hassan Wayam is survived by a wife and four children as well as many grandchildren.
