Supreme Court sacks APC’s Lyon as Bayelsa Governor-Elect

The Supreme Court has sacked the Bayelsa State Governor-Elect David Lyon, and his Deputy Biobarakuma Degi-Eremieoyo a day to their scheduled inauguration.

The apex court delivered the verdict in a unanimous judgment read by Justice Ejembi Ekwo. The court had a day earlier upheld the nomination of Lyon as governorship candidate.

The court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to Mr Lyon and a fresh certificate be issued to the governorship candidate with the highest votes cast and wide geographical spread in the governorship election held on November 16, 2020.

Mr Lyon was sacked for running on the same ticket a with a man with a fake certificate.

The Supreme Court ruling now paves the way for the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Diri Duoye, being the candidate with the highest lawful votes, to become the next governor of Bayelsa State.
