Stop lawlessness or be treated as terrorists, Kebbi chief judge tells ‘Yan-Sa-Kai’

The Chief Judge of Kebbi State, Justice Suleiman Muhammad Ambursa, has warned that the law will take its course on those who have not only taken law into their hands but also become a law into themselves.

Ambursa spoke during an interactive session among various interest groups in the state summoned by Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu on Saturday at the Presidential Lodge, Birnin Kebbi.

The forum reappraised the security situation in Zuru Emirate with emphasis on the activities of self-help groups known as ‘Yan-Sa-Kai’ with its security implications to the peaceful co-existence of the area.

The chief juge said ‘Yan-Sa-Kai’ groups have operated against the law and even committed murder, adding that the Judiciary was determined to help the government sustain peace.

He demanded that leaders of the self-appointed security surveillance groups be summoned for a meeting towards restoring law and order.

He made it clear that it was incumbent on operatives of the ‘Yan-Sa-Kai’ groups to obtain legal and lawful permission to bear firearm as against what obtained now.

The chief judge tasked elders, opinion leaders and top echelons of state of affairs in Zuru emirate to be up and doing to bring law and order to the activities of ‘Yan-Sa-Kai’.

Justice Suleman Ambursa was emphatic that if such self help groups persisted in their lawless ways of operation without control, the government should treat them as terrorists.

Addressing the gathering, the chief host, Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu said the problem has jeopardized law and order in the area as lawyers were being threatened while courts could not function normally.

In addition, illegal road blocks were being mounted by ‘Yan-Sa-Kai’ groups, which also engaged in extra-judicial killings.

The governor recalled the town hall meeting held in Zuru attended by him, the Inspector-General of Police and other heads of security outfits in the country while a follow-up meeting was held in Abuja.

Unfortunately, the problem has persisted, citing the killing of the District Head of Bajidda, and just this Friday, ‘Yan-Sa-Kai’ groups prevented a meeting at Mahuta from being held to select a successor to the late District Head of Bajidda on the pretext that such candidate must be their own choice.

The governor warned that the government would not allow the formation of militias in any part of the state or allow a band of people to take away the peaceful nature Kebbi state has been known for.

As the Chief Security Officer of the state, the governor added that he would perform his constitutional responsibility incisively to bring law and order back to the area.

The Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sama’ila Muhammadu Mera as well as the Waziri of Gwandu, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar who represented the Emir of Gwandu, and the Majidadin Zuru who represented the Emir of Zuru made separate contributions.

Other speakers included the representative of Emir of Yauri, Galadiman Yauri Alhaji Mu’azu, Ibrahim Ngaski of Civil Societies Organization, Professor Ahmad Sanda, Department of Economics, Usmanu Danfodio University Sokoto, who represented Kebbi Development Forum, a Professor of Water Engineering from Pakistan, Hajiya Kulu Namani and Hamza Bello.
