Renowned economist, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, elected to serve on ABU Governing Council

Former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of FSB International Bank Plc Mohammed Hayatu-Deen has been elected to represent Ahmadu Bello University Convocation on the Governing Council of the institution.

Hayatu-Deen was elected today at the 1st Convocation meeting of the University held at Main Campus of the University.

Convocation is an organ of the University that brings together all the academic members of the University and the University alumni. It is an established tradition in the world’s oldest and most distinctive universities.

It is mentioned under the composition of the Council where it is stated that one person appointed by Convocation from among its members shall be a member of the Council.

Hayatu-Deen is an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University having graduated in 1976 with Bsc Economics.

He was Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, New Nigeria Development Company (NNDC) from 1983 to 1988.

As NNDC’s Group Chief Executive, Hayatu-Deen provided leadership, direction and oversight to 140 subsidiary and associate companies under the group portfolio.

Hayatu-Deen has in the course of his career been Chairman/Director of several organizations, including Nigerian Stock Exchange, Northern Nigeria Investment Limited, Nigeria Hotels Limited, Kaduna Textiles Limited, New Nigeria Construction Company, Benue Cement Company, Virgin Nigeria Limited, Seven Up Bottling Company and many others.
He has also been involved in a number of extra-curricular and national assignments.

For example, he was a member, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Transition Committee and Chairman of the Transition Committee on Economy as well as Chairman Nigerian Economic Summit Group – Nigeria’s leading Economic think-tank.

Hayatu-Deen founded the Alpine Group in 2005, a project development company focused on intervening in high growth sectors of the economy through direct investments.

And in 2000 Hayatu-Deen was conferred with a National Honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in recognition of his numerous services to the nation.

In his address before the election of Hayatu-Deen, His Majesty the Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, Obi of Onitsha, described the Convocation meeting as a worthy step for ABU in living up to its enabling laws which would become part of the University’s enduring tradition.

The Chancellor also said that Convocation as an organ of the University should equally be a forum where the academic staff and the alumni would exchange ideas, discuss the institution’s challenges and strategise on the way forward.

In his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Kabiru Bala, expressed hope that the meeting would strengthen the relationship and goodwill between the University and its alumni on the one hand and between the academic staff and the alumni on the other.

The Vice-Chancellor explained that since the inception of his administration the University had made great strides in reaching out to its key stakeholders notably the alumni of the University.
