REC promises free and fair supplementary election in Adamawa

The Resident Electoral Commissioner of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Adamawa State, Barrister Hudu Yunusa Ari, has promised that the commission will conduct free, fair, credible and acceptable elections in the state,

Hudu told journalists in Bauchi that the electoral commission does not have a political party, adding that he has no reason to favor any candidate or political party.

He explained that the election was declared inconclusive due to the discrepancy found in the results of Fufore Local Government Area, where the number of votes for members of the state assembly were found in the governorship election results sheets.

He added that there were reports of the theft of ballot boxes by unknown persons along the road, which resulted in three different results that could not be resolved.

Commissioner Hudu said that when such problems occur as it is under the election laws, if you are found in such a situation, then the election will be declared inconclusive and the people will be given the opportunity to come out and vote again.

He said that although doing that did not please some people, but doing that is justice, adding that this is the reason why some politicians have threatened his life.

“I am the Chairman of the Electoral Security Committee of the security agencies while the Commissioner of Police insists that we must declare the results of the election because if we do not do that, he can’t guarantee my security in Adamawa State,”

He said the men of the Department of State Security Service took them out of the election results announcement room, where the soldiers took them barracks,

The REC condemned the threat to his life and explained how he spent the night in the barracks.

He said that the situation was not good when they went again the next day and the military officers rescued them and took them to the airforce barracks, from there they took a flight to Abuja,

Although the INEC headquarters set the date of April 15 to conclude all the elections held across the country, Ari said that he is waiting for directives from the headquarters on what to do.

He said that he is ready to do whatever the headquarters instructs him to do, his duty was to compile the reports of all that had happened and submit it to the INEC national headquarters, and whatever they decide on the matter is the thing to follow.
