Power minister commissions solar projects in Kano primary health centres, schools

Minister of Power Engr Sale Mamman has commissioned solar power projects in various Local Government Areas of Kano State comprising of various capacities in both Primary Health Centre (PHC) and educational institutions.

According to the minister, the projects were conceived under a Technical Assistance grant programme, a bilateral cooperation programme funded by the European Union, and implemented by the Department for International Development (DFID) with oversight provided by the Ministry.

The commissioned projects include: 95kW in Getso PHC, 79.20kW in Ajingy PHC, 79.20kW in Tsanyawa PHC, 47.25kW in Dandinshe PHC, 15.84kW in Ganduje PHC, and 15.84kW in Gwarmai PHC.

Others are 95kW in Girls Science College Garko, 79.20kW in Government Secondary School Gwarzo, 79.20kW in Science College Dowakin Tofa, 47.25kW in Government Girls College Kano (Former WTC), 15.84kW in Government Girls Arabic Secondary School Dambatta and 15.84kW in Ganduje Primary School.

Mamman said “We are grateful to the European Union and their implementation partners who collaborated with us to develop these projects, providing reliable electricity supply, which will improve the lives of people through improved: health care, education, water and jobs creation.”

He added that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has developed policies and regulatory instruments that allow the power ministry to work with development partners and the private sector for affordable electricity to the people, including those in rural areas.

“As at today, at least more than 30 New Mini-Grid projects have been commissioned across the country providing reliable power supply to over 40,000 people in Off-Grid areas. These projects are mostly developed through public-private partnership, confirming the confidence of the private sector.

“The Ministry will also provide 5 million households with solar home systems under the Nigeria Economic Sustainability Plan which is aimed at increasing electricity access and reducing the effect of the covid-19 pandemic,” Mamman added.

Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje commended the Buhari administration for the projects.
