Police, Shiites clash in Kaduna

Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), a Shiite group, clashed with the police in Kaduna today.

The IMN members were on Ashura mourning procession around central market area, on Ahmadu Bello Way in the metropolis.

The Shiites used the processions to demand for the release of their lead Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky and his wife Zeenat who have been in detention and facing trial for murder.

“Many were injured in the clash while others were arrested,” a witness told Dateline Nigeria.

The Kaduna State Police Command was not immediately available for comment. But a source said the procession was dispersed for “causing untold hardship” to innocent citizens.
