Owerri attack update: Ex-soldier among five IPOB members killed

An ex-soldier of the Nigerian Army was among five suspected IPOB members killed by soldiers and police after a foiled attack on the police headquarters in Owerri today.

Gunmen earlier today launched an attack on the state police command headquarters, during which two of the attackers were killed by security forces and a Hummer bus was recovered.

Giving an update on the attack, a security source said the gunmen were trailed by a combined team of soldiers and policemen to a building they had escaped to where three more were killed and one arrested.

The source disclosed that one of those killed was an IPOB member who appeared in a recent video, claiming to be a former member of the Nigerian Army 71 Intake (year of enlistment).

Dateline Nigeria gathered that the gunmen were killed in an exchange of fire with security agents.

“One of them was arrested alive and he revealed that seven of them carried out the failed attack today, so the team is still combing the area where the arrest was made to get one of the gunmen who is still on the run,” he said.

Residents told Dateline Nigeria that sporadic gunshots were heard allover the state capital earlier today.
