NHRC records 214 rights abuses in Bauchi in 2020

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said it received a total of 214 different cases of human rights abuses across Bauchi State within the year 2020.

Bauchi State Coordinator of the commission Mrs Dala Yahcit stated this on Tuesday when she paid a courtesy visit on the leadership of the Bauchi State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the Press Center.

She gave the breakdown of the abuses to include rape cases, torture, use of force, physical abuse as well other forms of gender-based violence.

Yahcit said the commission was able to amicably resolve some of the abuses while others are pending at the courts for judicial arbitration.

The coordinator explained that the commission is a statutory body set up by the law to encourage the general public whose rights are violated by anyone to feel free and report to the Commission for necessary action.

She advocated for the enactment of more laws to protect children’s rights saying that the existing ones are not adequate.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Bauchi State council Comrade Umar Sa’id called on the NHRC to establish offices at local governments levels across the state.

He said a lot of people, especially those that live in the rural areas, do not know the existence and duties of the commission despite the rate of rights violation in the rural areas.

Umar adder that if the commission has local governments offices, oppressed villagers could have their rights protected like other enlightened citizens.

He assured the coordinator that journalists in the state are ever ready to partner with the commission to protect the human rights of the people of the state and ensure that justice is done to victims.
