NCoS, NASRDA synergize to promote offenders’ training

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) is set to partner with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) in the area of training and re-training offenders, aimed at further boosting and strengthening security in correctional centers as well as reducing crime to the barest minimum in the country.

The Director General of the Agency, Dr. Halilu Ahmad Shaba, disclosed this when a team from the Resource Mobilization Committee of the Nigerian Correctional Service, led by Assistant Controller General in Charge Welfare, MI Attah, paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Abuja.

The DG said that his agency is pursuing a robust partnership with security outfits in the country, and promised to support the Service in promoting offenders’ reformation and reintegration back into society.

Dr. Shaba lauded the service for the recent reforms it has gone through, such as; the change in its nomenclature, which has propelled the various reformatory programs going on in Custodial Centers nationwide.

The DG specifically mentioned the educational programs for inmates, who now have the opportunity to study up to a doctorate degree while serving their sentences. This gesture, he said, has aided the reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration of the offenders a great deal.

Earlier in his address, ACG MI Attah, who was at the behest of the Controller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, enumerated the areas in which the Service can partner with the agency to enhance offenders’ reformation using education and vocational skills acquisition programs.

He also enumerated efforts made by the Service in employing technological means to ensure safe and humane custody of the legally interned, as well as their effective modification for a safer society.
