NBC sanctions TV stations over use of ‘unverified’ footages

The National Broadcasting Commission has sanctioned a number of television stations for “a gross violation of the broadcast code” including the use of unverifiable online video footages obtained from social media.

The affected stations include Africa Independent Television, AIT, Arise TV and Channels Television.

Acting Director-General (DG) of the NBC, Armstrong Idachaba, said each of the stations will be fined not less than N2 million, adding that it would be the last warning before a heavier sanction will be introduced.

Idachaba also announced that DAAR Communications, owners of the AIT, will be fined separately for using an unverifiable news item on the fire incident at the National Christian Centre.

It however noted the retraction by the AIT.
