Mozambique goat awarded special certificate

A famous Mozambican breed of goat has been given a special listing as part of plans to protect its identity when exported to the global market.

The Minister of Industry and Commerce, Carlos Mesquita, said adding the Geographical Indication (GI) sign to the goat’s products would ensure its reputation for quality will be protected.

The Tete goat has special significance in Mozambique because of its distinct sweet meat.

Goat meat can be eaten at any time in Mozambique, but most frequently in traditional and social ceremonies, including libations, weddings, and during graduation events.

A GI is a certificate that proves that a product comes from a specific area known for quality, and means products from other areas cannot use the same name – like Champagne or Parmesan cheese.
