Mother loses four children to grenade explosion in Zamfara

Residents of Magamin Diddi village in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State are mourning the death of the seven of their children as a result of grenade explosion.

The device, which was launched at bandits but failed to detonate, was picked up by the nine kids who had gone to the farm to get corn stalks.

When they came across the grenade, they didn’t know what it was and it exploded shortly after they picked it up. Some died on the spot while others gave up in the hospital, the residents said.

A mother, who lost four children in the tragedy, told the BBC Hausa service that she has accepted the death of her children as the will of God.

She said though they heard the sound of the explosion and even saw the dust raised by it, it was a girl in the area that took them to the spot where it happened.

When they reached the spot, some have died while others were wounded. Some of the wounded died in the hospital, she said.

Zamfara Commissioner of Security and Home Affairs, Alhaji Abubakar Dauran, said the device might have been launched by security agents during an attack on bandits.

The deceased kids had since been buried in accordance of Islamic rites, Dauran added.
