Mamman Daura: How I relate with President Buhari

Malam Mamman Daura, the influential nephew of President Muhammadu Buhari, has opened up on his relationship with the government.

In an exclusive interview with BBC Hausa service, a brief of which was aired Tuesday morning, Daura played down his influence on the government.

Mamman Daura, a former newspaper editor and manager, said though he visits the president from time to time, he does not offer advice when it is not solicited.

“I do go to him and offer advice when he asks for it. But I don’t just go on my own and say I want to do this or that, no! You don’t do that to government,” Daura said.

On his relationship with the president, he said Buhari is his uncle, a younger brother to his late father [Dauda Daura]. “My father was the eldest and Buhari the youngest from the same mother,” he said, and confirmed that they grew together with the president.

On the rotational presidency in the country, Daura said Nigerians should be concerned with competence and capacity, not who comes from where.

BBC Hausa said the full interview will air on Saturday, August 1, on its social media handles and website.
