Late former Guards Brigade commander buried in Abuja

The former Guards Brigade Commander and one time Director of Procurement Defence Headquarters, Major General Raoof Lanre Akpata (rtd) was on Wednesday, buried in Abuja.

A statement by the Nigerian ArmynDirector Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu said “The deceased Senior officer, who hails from Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State, was born on 11 October 1950.

“An alumnus of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Major General Akpata was commissioned into the Nigerian Army infantry Corps on 22 June 1974, as a member of 11 Regular Course.

“Late General Akpata held various command appointments, including Commanding Officer 1 Amphibious Battalion, Commander 22 Infantry Brigade and Commander Headquarters Guards Brigade. He voluntarily retired from active service on 11 October 2005.”

In his oration during the event, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt General Faruk Yahaya, represented by the Managing Director, Nigerian Army Micro Finance Bank, Major General Kamal Yusuf described the late senior officer as a dedicated, hardworking, calm and courageous senior officer, who was committed to his responsibilities during his active years in the service of the Nigerian Army.

He prayed for the repose of the senior officer’s soul and for God to grant the bereaved, the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
