Kano ex-justice commissioner Aliyu Umar dies

...late lawyer led prosecution of ex-CJN Onnoghen

A former Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice of Kano State Aliyu Umar (SAN) has died.

He died in the early hours of Friday in Kano after a protracted battle with lung cancer, family sources told Dateline Nigeria. He was 68.

He has since been buried after funeral prayers Friday morning in Kano.

One of his most recent outings was as a leader of the prosecution team in the trial of former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Walter Onnoghen for alleged corruption at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

Born on June 16, 1952, Aliyu was a Director, Public Prosecutions in the Ministry of Justice of Kano State between 1986 and 1988.

He later served as the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of the state between 2003 and 2011.

Meanwhile, Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, in his condolence message, has described the late Attorney General as an icon, who left indelible mark in the history and practice of judiciary in the country.

“We really missed one of the country’s finest legal practitioners. We are touched severely with the passing away of our own, Barrister Aliyu Umar (SAN) who was two times Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice of our dear state,” he stated.

Governor Ganduje said Barrister Umar was an epitome of justice, as well as “…an embodiment of unrivalled and unassuming dispensation of justice, which was manifested in his struggle for the promotion of access to justice and equality before the law.”

He prayed for Allah’s mercy and blessings on the reposed soul of the late Attorney General, while calling on his children to follow his suit for loving and serving humanity, for the overall development of man, as a centre of development.

“On behalf of the government and good people of Kano state, I am sending this condolence message to the families of our beloved Barrister Aliyu Umar SAN, Kano state, Nigerian judiciary and the nation as a whole. As his death leaves a great vacuum in the nation’s judicial system,” Ganduje said.

He urged upcoming lawyers to always look up for a role model in the activities of the late highly experienced judicial guru, “…not only the upcoming lawyers, even other senior lawyers have a lot to copy from the late Barrister Umar,” he said.
