Kannywood’s Khairat Abdullahi opens up on singing, acting

Khairat Abdullahi is a famous Kannywood singer and now actress. As a singer, her voice had graced numerous songs in Kannywood movies.

Now, as an actress, she’s putting more than a face to her soronous voice.

The Kaduna born actress speaks to Dateline Nigeria about singing and acting, the coronavirus and more. Excerpts:

You were known as a singer. But recently you were seen in a film. What pushed you into acting?

Every singer can act, except if the interest is not there. But personally I love acting. So when the opportunity presented itself I simply grabbed it with both hands.

You have done duets with Umar M. Sharif, Alin D Man and so on. Tell us more.

I did a number of songs, some I can remember and some I can’t. There is one I did for Rariya by Rahama Sadau; there is Mansur, Ruwan Dare. There are also the old ones like Daiman, Ciwon Idanu Na etc.

How was your experience during the COVID-19 lockdown?

There ia nothing that coronavirus pandemic has not affected. It was like a raging inferno that consumed everything on its path.

Tell us about some of the things you are working on at the moment

I am working on so many projects, including video and audio albums of Kuzo Ku Ji Labari. And there a single that is also in the pipeline. Some of the trailers are there on my YouTube channel.

Is the government supporting you as a singer?

That is difficult to say. It is possible the government is doing something but those at the top are not allowing it to trickle down. We can only assume. But we certainly don’t see the government’s hands in what we do.

Many people say there is too much infighting among singers. Why?

People are different. We only need to understand that and be able to work together. We must eschew bitterness and holding unnecessary grudges among ourselves. It is only when we unite that we will make meaningful progress.
