Kaduna schools to remain shut pending ‘readiness assessment’

The Kaduna State Government has suspended the proposed school resumption dates of 21 or 25 January 2021 pending readiness assessment.

This is contained in a letter sent by the Kaduna State Ministry of Health to its Education counterpart titled “Recommendation to suspend resumption of schools until readiness assessments for Covid-19 are conducted.”

The letter dated January 21, 2021, and signed by the Kaduna State Commissioner of Health Dr Amina Mohammed Baloni, reads:

“You may wish to recall that during the stakeholders meeting on Monday the 18 of January 2021, a committee set up to review guidelines for the resumption of schools proposed the dates of 21 or 25 January 2021 to open schools across the state.

“The Ministry of Health kindly recommends that you suspend these dates pending the conduct of a readiness assessment in a sample of schools across the State.

“You may wish to recall the findings by the Infection Prevention and Control team presented at the meeting revealed compliance to the guidelines was below average in the schools visited.

“We anticipate your favorable response on this to help curtail the spread of COVID-19 in Kaduna State. Please find attached general protocols for schools for your reference.

“Please accept the assurances of my highest regards.”
