Gunmen attack Sokoto police station, kill DPO, abduct women

Gunmen have attacked a police station in Gidan Madi, a town in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the town was killed while some women were abducted during the attack which took place in the early hours of Thursday.

A resident of the town said they were sleeping when they were awoken to the sound of sporadic gunshots.

The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed the attack to the BBC Hausa, but the spokesman ASP Muhammad Sadiq did not give further details, especially with regard to the fate of the DPO.

The suspected bandits also looted weapons, including an AK 47 rifle, from the police station.

“The gunmen launched a surprise attack on the policemen when they were sitting within the premises of the police station,” a resident of Gidan Madi told the BBC Hausa.

Activities of armed bandits have continued to worry the people. Only recently, Tangaza was attacked where a bride and a nursing mother were abducted.

The military say they are working hard to address the menace of banditry in the north west states of Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna and parts of Niger state.
