Gunmen attack Abuja-Kaduna highway, kill ex-corps member

Bandit terrorists on Friday attacked the Abuja-Kaduna highway, causing panic among motorists plying the route.

Dateline Nigeria learnt that a passenger travelling in a commercial vehicle was shot dead, while the driver was shot on his arm.

The passenger killed has been identified as Aleeyu M. Lawal, a graduate of Kaduna Polytechnic who recently completed his one year mandatory National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) programme.

“Aleeyu was returning to Kaduna from Abuja when their vehicle came under fire around Kasarami. We were told that they left Abuja in the evening and were attacked around 8-9pm,” a neighbour Jameel Ibrahim told Dateline Nigeria on Saturday.

“His funeral prayer held Saturday morning at his family house located on Gero Road, Tudun Nupawa in Kaduna metropolis.

The Kaduna State Police Command is not immediately available for comment. The Kaduna police commissioner Yekini Ayoku had shortly after assuming mantle of leadership, took his first official tour to Kaduna-Abuja road with a view to restoring public confidence.

Dateline Nigeria reports that ongoing reconstruction of the highway has slowed movement due to two major diversions between Dutse and Jere communities.
