Gombe State Government will soon review upward, the annual scholarship allowances to the indigenes of the State studying in various higher institutions of learning across the country.

The governor who was represented by Secretary to the state government, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi said his administration is not unaware of the plight of students whom he described as “future leaders of Gombe State”.

He said, “I have followed submissions from the Commissioner for Higher Education about your scholarship allowances and discovered that some of you collect only 7,000 Naira as allowance for a whole year. I felt this is grossly inadequate. We will review this and change it to a reasonable amount that will genuinely support your educational pursuit”

The governor also revealed that he will be appointing three Special Assistants on Students’ Affairs from each of the senatorial zones soon.

On the issue of a vehicle request put forward earlier by the association, the governor said, “Initially we were considering giving you a 12-seater bus, but some of my cabinet members advised that we should get something bigger; a 24-seater bus or at best 32-seater bus; therefore we shall soon fulfil this promise “.

Governor Inuwa commended the students’ zeal to join the war against drug abuse, maintaining that it is the cause of all vices. He said “drug abuse is the cause of most of the problems we have in Nigeria today; people that go into robbery, kidnapping, rape and other criminal activities take drugs to lose their senses before they commit such nefarious acts”

He then urged them to continue to be vanguards that fight the menace of drug abuse any slightest opportunity.

The governor also called on the students to enroll in the ongoing voter’s reregistration exercise as it is only when they have PVC that they would be able to elect the leaders of their choices.

“I am not mindful of who you are going to elect, but for you to be a good citizen of Gombe State you must have your PVC”. He added.

Earlier in his remark, the National President of GOSSA, Comrade Adamu Muhammad Hina thanked Governor Inuwa Yahaya for organizing such a befitting Iftar for Gombe State Students, describing the gesture as honour to the entire world of scholarship.

He commended the good leadership of the governor which he said puts Gombe at the forefront in terms of human capital and infrastructural development.

Comrade Adamu pledged his solidarity and support to the governor on behalf of all other members of students’ association.

He said, “we will insha Allah next month hold a rally of at least 2000 students starting from FCE(T), Gombe down to Government House in solidarity to His Excellency where we will appeal to him to contest for second term. Because we are quite satisfied with his performance.

“Our large pool of followership of more than 1.7 million active members are ever ready to support Governor Inuwa to reciprocate what he is doing for us and the good people of Gombe State” he added.

The session had in attendance, Commissioner for Higher Education and his Education and Youth counterparts, Special Advisers and other aides.
