Ganduje declares support for SWAT, commends Kano protesters

Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has declared support for the police SWAT unit which is to replace the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Governor Ganduje made this known when a coalition of youth groups visited him after organising a protest in support of the new police outfit.

“We will not disrespect the police because they are the giving us protection,” Ganduje said while addressing the youth groups.

“Those soiling the name of the police among SARS operatives deserve all the protest against them. We commend the president for introducing ways of reforming the police in Nigeria.

When asked by the BBC Hausa if as governor his comment will not lead to the politicisation of the protest, Ganduje the Kano protest is for reforms not destruction.

Nigeria is witnessing protests against police brutality in parts of the country, forcing thw Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu to disband SARS and create SWAT to fill the vacuum left by the defunct unit which was established to fight armed robbery and other violent crimes.
