Former IGP Gambo Jimeta dies

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Gambo Jimeta has died after a protracted illness.

Jimeta was appointed IGP in 1986 to succeed Etim Inyang and was succeeded by Aliyu Attah in 1990.

President Muhammadu Buhari, in a condolence message, expressed sadness over the death of Jimeta, who was also the Dan Lawan Adamawa.

Conveying the condolences of his family and that of the government and people of Nigeria, Buhari described the late crack police detective as “a man of great courage, intellect and a true Nigerian Statesman.”

He added that “Today, Nigeria lost a great son. He lived for the nation and served with all his strength.”

“May Allah bless his soul and give fortitude to the bereaved family, the government and people of Adamawa State to bear this irreparable loss,” President Buhari prayed.

Born in 1937, Jimeta was also a National Security Adviser to President of Nigeria Ibrahim Babangida.

For his education, he attended Jimeta Elementary School, 1947-49; Yola Middle School, 1950-55; Bauchi Provincial Secondary School, 1956-58; Government College, Keffi, 1958-59; Nigeria Police College, Kaduna, 1959; Police College, Ikeja, 1959; Detective Training School, Wakefield, UK, 1962, and Bramhill Police College, UK, 1963.

He was also at the International Police Academy, Washington DC, USA, 1980; National Police Academy, Cairo, Egypt, Wolfson College, University of Cam bridge, UK, 1980-81, National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru.
