A former lecturer of the Department of Languages, Kaduna Polytechnic, Austin Umera, has killed himself after shooting his wife in the eyes at close range.
Dateline Nigeria learnt that Mrs Maureen Umera was attacked by her now late husband in the early hours of Thursday at their house in Abubakar Kigo Riad extension.
Dr Maureen Umera, a part-time lecturer at the Department of Languages, Kaduna State University, was a former teacher at the Kaduna Capital School.
She is receiving treatment at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital Accident and Emergency Unit.
When Dateline Nigeria visited the house where the late Mr and Mrs Umera were residing, it was locked.
But a neighbour who participated in conveying Mrs Umera to the nearby Alba Clinic on Constitution Road together with police said the woman was shot in one of her eyes and was bleeding seriously when they reached her.
“But we were advised to take her to the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna because it was an emergency situationd,” the neighbour said, adding that both the husband and the wife were quite elderly.
“We found the fabricated gun used by the former lecturer alonh with blood stains all over the room,” the neighbour said.
The spokesman of the Kaduna State Police Command, ASP Mohammed Jalige, confirmed the incident saying investigation has commenced, even though some neighbours said the couple had a misunderstanding.
He said policemen have visited Mrs Umera at the hospital and she was stable. He however said there may be need for her to recover before a successful investigation can be carried out.
The corpse of Mr Umera has since been deposited at the Barau Dikko Hospital in Kaduna.
