Emir of Biu, Mai Umar Mustapha Aliyu, dies at 80

The Emir of Biu, Mai Umar Mustapha Aliyu, has died at the age of 80.

The monarch died Monday night at the Federal Medical Centre in Gombe after an undisclosed illness.

He was buried on Tuesday after funeral prayers within his palace in Biu, headquarters of Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.

The burial took place at Viukutha village, about four kilometers away from Biu town.

The funeral prayer was attended by the Borno State Deputy Governor Umar Usman Kadafur, some commissioners, members of the National Assembly, House of Assembly members, among others.

The late monarch was born on November 9, 1940 in Biu and had his early education at the Kwaya Kusar Junior Primary School between 1947 and 1949 and Biu Central Primary School from 1950 to 1953. He was at the Hausari Primary School in Maiduguri from 1953 to 1955.

Mai Umar, who became the Emir of Biu in 1989, is survived by wives, children and grandchildren.

Dateline Nigeria recalls that Mai Umar was the father of the day when the daughter of the Chief Army Staff Lt Gen Tukur Buratai got married to Zanna Umar Sani in his palace two weeks ago.
