Travellers stranded, traffic at standstill on Abuja-Kaduna highway

There is serious gridlock on the Abuja-Kaduna expressway this morning, leaving many travellers stranded.

Dateline Nigeria learnt that the everbusy highway was blocked by protesting drivers who accused a soldier of shooting at the tyre of their colleague and smashing his windshield over bribe.

A traveller Saturday Sabo Kachako said on his Facebook page that “we have been here since 3:47am. We have not moved an inch because the road is completely blocked.”

Another traveller, who said they ran into the gridlock around 6am, said they were told that a trailer transporting cattle to the South was stopped around Jere by security agents who demanded for bribe.

“The driver offered them N100 but it was rejected, leading one of the security agents to shoot at the tyre of the vehicle,” the traveller said.

The drivers of heavy duty vehicles, he added, blocked the road in solidarity with their colleague. “They insist that the government must address them before they will open the road for traffick.”
