Boko Haram insurgents ‘attack town days after displaced return’

Boko Haram militants have attacked a town in Borno State and prevented people from leaving, the BBC has reported

Details of events in Kukawa, near Lake Chad, are hard to establish as the area has no mobile network coverage – another reminder of how this decade long conflict is hindering development.

The Nigerian military has not yet commented on the attack which is reported to have taken place just days after hundreds of displaced people returned to live there.

The army had said the area was safe to return to following an operation against Boko Haram.

Close to two million people are displaced in north-east Nigeria and the UN warns that because it’s still so dangerous about half of them can’t even be reached by humanitarian agencies.
