Boko Haram attacks Askira town in Southern Borno

Boko Haram insurgents have aattacjef Askira town, about 140km from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

Askira Uba is one of the six local government areas that make up Southern Borno Senatorial District.

According to local sources, the insurgents drove into town around Magrib (evening) prayer time in gun trucks and motorcycles.

The insurgents reportedly spent hours exchanging fire with the military.

Residents told the BBC Hausa that the insurgents forced their way into the main hospital in the area and also attempted to sack a military facility.

There were also reports that the insurgents have attacked Ngom in Bama, according to the BBC. Details however remain sketchy as the military authorities have not commented on the attack.
