Bauchi lawmaker sponsors free surgery for 200 people in Kirfi community

A member of Bauchi State House of Assembly Abdulkadir Umar Dewu has sponsored 200 people in Kirfi Community in the state.

He said the surgery has restored and revived the lost hope of those with serious health challenges in the area.

A 19-year-old appendix patient, who was on admission at Kirfi General Hospital, Saude Dalha of Baba Village, thanked the lawmaker for initiating the free surgery programme from which she benefitted.

Narrating her ordeal before the surgery to newsmen in Kirfi, Saude said she had been battling with stomachache for more than three months, an ailment which many times affected her ability to move or carry out her usual activities, but now she is healthy with the help of free surgery introduced by the lawmaker.

She said her parents are poor and could not afford to take her to hospital, but now she had found relief with the help of the medical doctor through the free surgery programme..

Mother of the patient Mallama Sabuwa said they could not raise the amount asked by the hospital because of their condition. She however said their hope of treating their daughter was rekindled when they heard that the lawmaker was starting a free surgery in his constituency.

Amina Adamu and her baby benefitted

Another patient Amina Adamu said the free surgery introduced saved her life and her baby’s. She is now recuperating in the hospital after undergoing the surgery free of charge courtesy of the lawmaker.

A community leader Mallam Ahmad Tijjani Abubakar Dewu said the entire community are happy with the initiative because it helped many people who could not afford medical treatment.

The Chief Medical Director of Kirfi General Hospital Dr Usman Musa Usman said since the inception of the free surgery programme four months ago, over 200 people within the community have benefitted, and urged other politicians to emulate the lawmaker.

He said all patients undergo screening, while the ward head in their area and their parents will also sign their form before the surgery.

On his part the lawmaker Abdulqadir Dewu said he initiated the free surgery because of the health challenges he observed his community was facing but could not treat their ailments due to lack of funds.

Dewu said the project was introduced after a thorough research and discussion with the stakeholders in the area.

He pledged to continue with the free surgery up to the end of his tenure and promised to introduce more programmes that will better the lives of the people of Kirfi.
