Atiku salutes Emir of Gwandu Ilyasu Bashar at 80

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has congratulated the Emir of Gwandu Muhammad Ilyashu Bashar on the occasion of his 80th birthday.

Atiku said this in a statement posted on his social media handles on Friday.

“Emir of Gwandu and Chairman, Kebbi State Traditional Rulers, His Highness Ahaji Muhammadu Ilyasu Bashar, had a distinguished military career that saw him holding key command positions, including as Governor of old Gongola State.

“But even his post-military service as a monarch has been sterling and impactful so far. On this special day of his 80th birthday, I, and my family, wish him more years of good health in the service of his people and humanity,” Atiku said..

Born in 1941, Muhammad Ilyasu Bashar, who retired as from the Nigerian Army as a Major General, twice served as military Governor of Gongola State from 1976 to July 1978 during the military regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo, and again between January 1984 and August 1985 during the military regime of General Muhammadu Buhari.

He was named Emir of Gwandu on June 5, 2005.
