Afghan baby girl sold for $500 by starving family

A baby girl has been sold for $500 by her starving family in Afghanistan, BBC reports.

Since the Taliban seized power in August, Afghanistan has been facing the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world, with the country seeing a sharp deterioration in the situation.

The mother of the sold baby girl said, “My other children were dying of hunger so we had to sell my daughter”, adding that “I wish I didn’t have to sell my daughter.”

The girl’s father used to collect rubbish, but even that earns him nothing now. “We are starving. Right now we have no flour, no oil at home. We have nothing.”

Asked what would be the fate of his daughter, he said “My daughter doesn’t know what her future will be. I don’t know how she will feel about it. But I had to do it.”

BBC’s Yogita Limaye, who travels to a Médecins Sans Frontières hospital in Herat says “Once the baby is able to walk, she will be taken away by the man who bought her.

“The man has paid more than half of the $500 she’s been sold for. That will get the family through a few months. The man said the girl will be married to his child, but no one can be sure.”

The United Nations has issued a stark warning – that millions will die if urgent aid does not reach the Afghanistan soon.
