Active COVID-19 cases tops 17,600 in Nigeria

The total number of active COVID-19 cases in Nigeria currently stands at 17,670, authorities said on Wednesday.

There were 394 more infections and five deaths recorded in the country over the past day, according to the latest update by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The overall count in the country is now at 159,646, including 1,993 fatalities and 139,983 recoveries.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country with over 211 million people, has received some 4 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and started its immunization drive last week.

President Muhammadu Buhari received his first dose live on television to encourage the public to get vaccinated.

He said the government plans to vaccinate at least 70% of the population in 2021 and 2022, urging all state governments and political and religious leaders to play their part in making the drive a success.
