Abuja-Kaduna train ‘attacked with stones, not bullets’

An Abuja-Kaduna train was pelted with stones not attacked by bullets and there was no casualty, a passenger in one of the affected coaches told Dateline Nigeria on Thursday.

“I was inside one of the coaches affected. Two windows were badly damaged by the stones hauled by miscreants around Katari. There was nothing like gunmen,” Musa Bello said, adding that this is not the first time that the train would be stoned.

The Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), Mr Fidet Okhiria, also said “What happened according to the police escorts on the train is that a stone was thrown at the train by some boys, which affected only the window glass of coach SP4.”

The spokesman of the Kaduna State Police Command, Yakubu Abubakar, also dismissed the report, saying the management of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) did not report any such incidence.

According to him, “when I contacted the management of the train station in Kaduna, I was told that such rumour was baseless.”

Reports in some online media had earlier said that the Abuja-bound train was attacked by gunmen near Katari, a town in Kachia local government area of Kaduna State on the Abuja-Kaduna highway.
