9 persons sentenced to death in 9 months in Kano

Nine people were sentenced to death in Kano from January to date over different offences, ranging from murder to rape and blasphemy.

Dateline Nigeria reports that state governors mostly hold the ace when it comes to execution of convicts after the completion of the legal process which may go up to Supreme Court.

Seven of those sentenced to death were tried for murder, one for rape and the other for blasphemy. See list of convicts and their offences below:

1. Ali Abdullahi: The first verdict was given on February 11 where one Ali Abdullahi was sentenced to death by hanging after he was convicted by Court 6 for murder.

2. Yakubu Ɗalha: Like Abdullahi, Yakubu was also convicted on March 3 for murder by Court 6. He was also sentenced to death by hanging.

3. Abdullahi Isyaku: Another court in Kano sentence Abdullahi Isyaku to death by hanging on March 16. He was found guilty of committing murder.

4. Mujahid Sa’id: Court 13 in Kano sentenced Mujahid to death by hanging after convicting him for murder on March 24.

5. Naziru Ya’u: Court 1 found Naziru guilty of murder on July 13 and sentenced him to death by hanging.

5. Shehu Ado Shehu: Court 6 convicted Shehu for murder on June 26. He was subsequently sentenced to death by hanging.

7. Isah Auta: Court 1 sentenced Isah to death by hanging on June 29. Isah was convicted for murder.

8. Yahaya Sharif-Aminu: A Sharia court in Kano on August 10 convicted the singer Yahaya Sharif-Aminu for blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and sentenced him to death by hanging. He has since appealed the ruling.

9. Mati Abdu: On August 12, an Upper Shari’a court convicted Mati for raping a 12-year-old girl and sentenced him to death by stoning under Section 127 (b) of the Kano State Shari’a Code Law 2000. The offence was committed in 2019 at Farsa Village of Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
