No fewer than 31 people returning from burial ceremony died in a road accident on the Akaeze-Ishiagu axis of Afikpo-Okigwe highway in Ivo local government area of Ebonyi State.
The Police Public Relations Officer for Ebonyi State Police Command, DSP Loveth Odah, who confirmed the accident, said five persons had been rescued even as search for other possible survivors continued.
The accident occurred Friday evening. It involved an Enugu-bound Mercedes Benz 608 bus conveying people returning from a burial ceremony in Ebonyi State.
The driver of the bus attempted to overtake a trailer near a bridge but lost control and veered off into the river. Most of the passengers reportedly drowned.
