20 burnt to death in Bauchi road accident

Twenty people have been burnt to death in an accident along Bauchi-Maiduguri federal highway in Bauchi State on Sunday.

The accident is coming 24 hours after 17 travellers, including a man, his wife and their four children, burnt to death in a similar accident in Nasarawa State.

The Police Public Relations Officer Bauchi State Police Command, DSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, confirmed the accident to Dateline Nigeria.

He said the charred bodies of the victims have been deposited at the mortuary of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH).

Wakili said two females survived the accident and are receiving treatment at the same hospital.

He said that police personnel promptly responded to the distress call and joined in the evacuation of the victims.

Eyewitness reported that the accident involved two vehicles that had a head-on collision at Mangorori in Tirwun, about 3km from the Bauchi metropolis.

He said the two vehicles involved are a Hummer bus belonging to Borno Express heading to Maiduguri from Jos with 18 passengers and a VW Golf car coming from Misau heading to Bauchi with four passengers.

Eye witnesses said that the two vehicles burst into flames immediately upon collision and 20 of the passengers were burnt beyond recognition.

A combined team of firefighters from Bauchi eventually put off the fire.
